The canings occurred outside a mosque in the city of Banda Aceh. The men stood quietly on a raised platform with their heads down as masked men took turns flogging them. Up to 1,000 spectators cheered, applauded, heckled and shouted insults at the men. Many filmed the caning on their smartphones. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The couple were arrested in March after it was suspected that they were gay and neighborhood vigilantes broke into their rented room and caught the men, ages 20 and 23, having sex. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is reportedly the first punishment since the conservative province introduced its anti-homosexuality laws in 2014. Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that criminalizes same-sex relations.
