Kennatay Leavell, 31, was shot several times in the face around 2:55 a.m. Friday outside the last of the Cabrini-Green rowhouses. Another man, 34, was shot several times in the abdomen and taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Kennatay’s mother and dad were at the scene weeping, while his mother begged to touch his body. After the ambulance came to carry him away, she got water to sweep away his blood from the sideway.
No mother, no parent should have to go through this, it’s simply heartbreaking.
Kennatay Leavell’s death came as Chicago passed a grim milestone: 400 homicides so far this year. That’s two days earlier than last year, when gun violence reached levels not seen in two decades. And that’s four months earlier than four years ago, when the city hit the mark shortly before Thanksgiving.
Lord help us!
