The state of California is suing Tesla for their treatment towards Black employees.
Remember in October 4, 2021, Tesla was ordered to pay a Black contractor over a racial abuse lawsuit. That period, an eight-person federal jury awarded Owen Diaz (An elevator operator) nearly $137 million in damages for racist incidents he suffered in 2015 and 2016 while working at Tesla’s plant in Fremont, Calif, according to Autoweek. The award combined $6.9 million in compensatory damages and $130 million in punitive damages.
Diaz accused Tesla of largely ignoring his complaints.
Co-workers from Telsa confirmed Diaz, was an elevator operator, but a supervisor, repeatedly used a racial slur toward him. He endured racist graffiti in the bathroom and derogatory caricatures of Black children in the workplace.
“It took four long years to get to this point. It’s like a big weight has been pulled off my shoulders,” Diaz told The New York Times after the verdict.
It’s 2022, and Telsa haven’t repented yet.
According to the Associated Press, California has filed a lawsuit against Tesla. The lawsuit was filed in Alameda County Superior Court by Kevin Kish, the head of the state’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing.
The suit states that the department “found evidence that Tesla’s Fremont factory is a racially segregated workplace where Black workers are subjected to racial slurs and discriminated against in job assignments, discipline, pay, and promotion creating a hostile work environment.”
Tesla had said in a statement , before the lawsuit was filed, about the Department of Fair Employment and Housing, “Attacking a company like Tesla that has done so much good for California should not be the overriding aim of a state agency with prosecutorial authority.”
However, since the lawsuit has been filed, nothing has been heard from Tesla.
What do you think about racism crawling back into the world?
