Robinho to serve a nine-year prison sentence for rape

Robinho has been requested to come and serve a nine-year prison sentence for rape. The Italian prosecutors have asked for an international arrest warrant for the Brazilian former Real Madrid, Manchester City, and AC Milan forward, 38, footballer Robinho, after he was convicted of rape, so he can serve a nine-year jail term.

It happened that In 2017, Footballer Robinho and five other Brazilians were found guilty of a gang rape of 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan nightclub.  As at January 2022, the Supreme Court in Rome dismissed Robinho’s final appeal against his conviction.

During his appeal, Robinho, did admit to having ‘contact’ with the woman he insisted it was consensual. However, the Milan Court of Appeals found that he had ‘belittled’ and ‘brutally humiliated’ the victim as it upheld the initial sentence in a December 2020 hearing.

The key evidences that were put forward  to initially convict the Robinho was, intercepted phone calls and messages between the footballer and those allegedly involved in the attack. one of the messages showed Robinho said: “It makes me laugh because I’m not interested, the woman was drunk, she doesn’t even knows what happened.” This caused his final efforts to overturn the conviction in the Supreme Court last month to fail.

Due to these reasons, the Italian prosecutors have asked their counterparts in Brazil to hand him over so he can serve his prison sentence. But, it is looking like it is not going to happen, since the Brazilian constitution does not allow the extradition of its citizens.

However, under the arrest warrant, if  Robinho leaves his country and sets foot in any of the nearly 70 countries Italy does have an extradition agreement with, he may be arrested.

The Brazilian footballer played for Real Madrid,  Manchester City, AC Milan, Santos, Guangzhou Evergrande, and several others during his playing career that also saw him score 28 goals in 100 appearances for the Brazil national team.

Is it now safe to say his career has ended? share your thoughts with us in the comment section.
